Composition Help

Writing a "composition" (essays for SAT, GRE, Freshman Comp classes, etc) is really no different from writing any other essay. It has the same basic structure the same writing process and requires the same polishing as any other essay.
The difference is in the topic. Usually a composition topic, if you're given one, is a question that tries to get you to think about something. It may ask you to describe something or compare and contrast two things, or anything else that would get you thinking and writing about a particular subject.

Here's a sample composition topic:
Do you think the machines we build might one day turn on us? Have they already? Discuss.
WHAT TO DO WITH A TOPIC
- Make sure you understand the topic really well. Look at the example above. There are at least three things it wants you to do:
- Decide whether you think machines might turn on us
- If you think so, decide if those machines have already turned on us.
- Write about (that's what "discuss" means) your decisions - explain yourself.
- Create a plan of action, an outline for how you are going to tackle all parts of the topic. You should write about EVERYTHING the topic demands, but don't write MORE than what it asks of you.
- Follow the process of writing any other essay, and you’ll be fine.
